Step Ten
That's it! Your Apple TV is jailbroken!
Now that you're fully jailbroken, you will want to install XBMC. This will allow you to stream free movies / TV straight from your newly unlocked Apple TV. Follow the step by step guide below.
Installing, and using, XBMC add-ons and plugins is a very simple process that can sometimes intimidate newbies, or first time users. The good news is that, by the end of this post, you will be able to install, uninstall, and find any XBMC tools you want within the confines of your Apple TV (1 or
2). Before we begin, let's go over what we need:
- Computer
- Add-On/Plugin Source
- Apple TV (1st or 2nd-generation)
The first step would be to find the add-ons you want to install. You can search XBMC's forums for things like skins, movie scrapers, music add-ons, picture add-ons, and more. Once you find what you want, download the .zip file to your computer and remember file location you save it to.
The next step would be downloading an SSH client onto your computer. This tool will enable you to browse the Apple TV menu from your computer.
- Windows – PuTTY or WinSCP
- MAC – CyberDuck
1. Open XBMC on your Apple TV and navigate from your Home Screen to Settings > System Information. You need to locate and take note of your system's IP address:
2. You now need to open your SSH Client. You will likely be met with either an option to open a Connection, if so select this option, or a group of boxes requiring input. Fill out the boxes using following:
- At the top you will likely see a drop down menu that says "File Transfer Protocol." Here you will need to select the option that says "SFTP" or "SSH" Server: Here you need to enter the IP address of your Apple TV that we located earlier.
- Username: root
- Password: alpine
4. Next you will need to navigate to the location that XBMC associates as its Home Page. This location is found @ "/User"
5. Now we need to find the add-on that you download earlier in this tutorial. Once you have located the file, you will need to drag it from your computer into this file
location as seen below. In this case I have copied XBMC's repo from my desktop into the file location provided.
Now that we have copied all desired items from the computer into the ATV we are now ready to put down the computer and pick up the ATV remote. The rest of these steps take place inside of your XBMC installation:
Installing Add-ons & Plugins
1. Open XBMC on your Apple TV and navigate from your Home Screen to the System Menu. From there you should see menu options similar to what is shown below.
2. Select the option titled "Add-ons". This will open the Add-ons control panel that is built into XBMC. Here you will take on of two options:
a. Install From Zip File (new add-ons that you want to install from a zip) b. Get Add-ons (this applies to the add-ons that are preinstalled on XBMC, or that you have already added to your installation previously)
3. If you chose to "Install from zip you will be taken to a file manager. You will need to navigate to the "Home Folder" where we copied are files over to. Once there, you will see the .zip we copied from our computer. And you will want to CLICK IT. For this example lets install SuperTV.
4. Clicking on the zip file will automatically install it within your system. Wait a few seconds and you will see a pop up informing you of its completion… as seen below.
5. Finally, we will need to know where our add-ons are installed. With video add-ons, 99% of the time they are installed within the Video Add-ons Section of your system. If you do not see your video add-on within the correct section, that means it has installed under the Programs Section of your installation.
How To Open and Use Add-Ons
Every Category within your XBMC installation has its own Add-ons section. Music, Videos, Programs, Photos… can all be opened to locate its specific Add-ons Sub Section. For example, if we open the Videos option on the main menu we will see it open up a new window with amenu item reading Video Add-ons.
If you were to open the Video Add-ons Section you will see all of the Video Add-ons that you have installed available for use. If you have yet to install any add-ons, you can take advantage of the "Get More" option as well. This will take you to all of the preinstalled Add-ons that come with your XBMC installation. From there you can simply click on the title of the item, and select install, much like we did in previous steps.
In this situation we do not see the SuperTV that we installed in our previous steps so we need to navigate to the Programs Section. Just like the Videos section, you will navigate to Programs/ Program Add-ons / and here you will find the SuperTV add-on that we installed.
Once you see the Add-on or Plugin that you were looking for you can simply click on the title to open the add-on to begin enjoying its features. Remember that every add-on is a bit different from the next, so there is a learning curve within each tool.
